What Is Jabbit?
Jabbit is a video game I'm creating using Godot Engine. Jabbit is also the name of the titular character, who is my mascot.
The game is a very simple 2D platformer, focused on online PVP. Gameplay is primarily inspired by the "Mario vs Luigi" mode seen in "New Super Mario Bros." for the Nintendo DS. The general themes of the game take inspiration from many works I love, but my memories of playing MvL with my siblings and friends made me want to create a similar game for modern platforms, with online multiplayer and built in mod support.
Development History
The game is still in very early development and no "playable" builds (meaning a match can be played and completed with others) currently exists. I've had the concept for Jabbit floating in my head for years now, and development of its current incarnation started September 20th 2023. It was intended to be "playable" before 2024 ended, as I started taking it more seriously that year. A series of complications in my own life have pushed its completion date back further and further. My goal is to finally provide a "playable" build before September of 2025 ends, after many breaks between bursts of development during 2024 and 2025.
Development of the game itself is primarily shared in a private Discord server with friends of mine. Once the game is in a more presentable state, I will show it publicly. Despite this, Jabbit himself has made some public appearances.
On July 6th 2025, I finally publicly showed a design for the titular character on Tumblr and Mastodon, created using my very limited art skills... I couldn't settle on a final design for a long time, but the one that eventually became his canon design grew on me over time despite newer attempts being made. On July 7th, I reused the sprite I made earlier and created a more "complete" reference sheet, again being posted on Tumblr and Mastodon. (Side note, you can also view art I make on my Gallery page!)
I finally settled on this one after a friend of mine started encouraging me to join Art Fight 2025, a yearly event I've been aware of for a long time but avoided out of lack of confidence. She really wanted to draw a character I made and I thought that this would serve as a decent excuse to finally put my creative side out in the wild once again, and get some much needed practice. I only ended up making two attacks... But it counts right? Regardless, this is why Jabbit exists online now! Far earlier than I thought given my troubles actually making the game.
Tools Used
Here's a list of most tools that make Jabbit possible!
- Godot Engine - The game engine! Very important!
- Aseprite - Every visual asset in game.
- Ardour - Music and sound effects.
- OBS Studio - Used to capture gameplay footage.
- Krita (Formerly) - Used for visuals before moving to Aseprite.
Trivia
Here's some random trivia about the game.
- Jabbit is my first game!
- Every asset in the game uses this colour palette.
- The way weapon animations are handled is inspired by both Pokémon battle animations, and HoloCure weapons.
- There is a "Jabbit Team". However, I'm the only one actually making the game. Everyone else on the team are friends who have their OCs featured! They also give me endless emotional support and encouragement. And bullying.
- This game is primarily for me and my friends and isn't really meant to be sold. I just plan on making it public in case people like it!
